Estrella-maker buys into Carlow Brewing

Hijos de Rivera, an independent, family-owned company based in Galicia, Northern Spain, has bought a 32% stake in The Carlow Brewing Company.

The founders of the Bagenalstown-based operation will retain their controlling majority shareholding and leadership of the company but the investment will enable the company to offer a return to its original group of minority shareholders as well as benefit from Hijos de Rivera’s well-established distribution channels and networks, aiding the development of new and existing export markets.

Renowned for its Estrella Galicia beer brand, Hijos de Rivera holds 6% of the Spanish beer market.

Carlow Brewing Company first developed a relationship with Hijos de Rivera when the company became its Spanish distributor two years ago. The investment was officially agreed in early April and further demonstrates the strength and potential of the Irish craft beer sector.
“The history and culture of the Hijos de Rivera group really appealed to me and the rest of the team in Bagenalstown,” said CBC Founder and Chief Executive Seamus O’Hara, “Although the brewery is over 100 years old the company demonstrates a progressive attitude which is underpinned by family values and a rich heritage.”

He added that the Spanish brewer and distributor can make a significant contribution to the future success of Carlow Brewing Company, “especially in helping us develop new and existing export markets for our beer and cider”.
Carlow Brewing Company, which has been in existence for over 20 years, is Ireland’s leading craft beer producer.
